Pick up any probiotic and you'll see a number followed by "CFU": 1 billion, 10 billion, 50 billion, sometimes more. It's the first thing most people compare, but it's only part of the story. Here's what CFU means and what else to look for.
What is a CFU?
CFU stands for colony forming units. It measures how many live, active microorganisms are in a serving, specifically how many are capable of multiplying to form a colony. A label that says "10 billion CFU" means each serving is intended to deliver about 10 billion of those live cultures.
Is a higher CFU count better?
Not necessarily. A bigger number looks impressive, but more isn't automatically more effective. These matter just as much:
- The strain or species. Different probiotics have been studied for different purposes, so the name on the label matters as much as the number.
- Whether the count holds up. Probiotics are living organisms and their numbers can decline over time. Check the storage directions and how the count is stated.
- Consistency. A probiotic you take every day is more useful than a higher-count one that sits in a cabinet.
For many everyday probiotics, amounts in the 1 to 10 billion CFU range are common.
Meet Bifidobacterium lactis
Pocketday Probiotic + Metabolism Strips use Bifidobacterium lactis (B. lactis), one of the most widely researched probiotic species. Bifidobacteria naturally live in the human gut, and B. lactis is commonly used in yogurts and supplements to support a healthy balance of gut bacteria.*
Probiotics vs. prebiotics
They sound alike, but they do different jobs:
- Probiotics are the beneficial live microorganisms themselves.
- Prebiotics are types of fiber that help feed beneficial bacteria.*
Each Pocketday probiotic strip contains both: 10 billion CFU of B. lactis plus 50 mg of polydextrose, a prebiotic fiber.
How to build a gut-friendly routine
- Eat a variety of fiber. Vegetables, fruit, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.
- Try fermented foods. Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi.
- Stay hydrated. Water helps fiber do its job.
- Be consistent. Take your probiotic the same way every day, as directed on the label.
Why a strip?
Most probiotics come as capsules. A dissolvable strip skips the pill entirely: place it on your tongue and it melts in seconds, no water needed. Pocketday's mixed-berry strips have no added sugar and are sweetened with monk fruit and stevia.
Who should check with a doctor first?
Talk to a healthcare provider before starting a probiotic if you're pregnant or nursing, under 18, taking medication, have a weakened immune system, or are managing a medical condition.
The bottom line
CFU tells you how many live cultures are in a serving, but the strain, the quality and your consistency matter just as much. For a simple, capsule-free option, try Probiotic + Metabolism Strips, or explore the Gut & Recovery collection.
